Barrett bill to proclaim Simcoe Day

Give credit, where credit it due, when it comes to the first Lieutenant-Governor of what is now Ontario.

Haldimand-Norfolk M-P-P Toby Barrett has introduced legislation to have the first Monday in August -best known as Civic Holiday – as Simcoe Day.

He says the City of Toronto recognizes John Graves Simcoe and his Act would extend the recognition across the province.

Barrett says Simcoe presided over the first sitting of the Ontario Legislature, established municipal governments, introduced trial-by-jury, banned slave imports and created Yonge Street.
