Fire rips through Burlington meat plant

At least half of a meat-processing plant in Burlington has been destroyed in a massive fire.

Firefighters from Burlington, Oakville, Stoney Creek and Hamilton were called to Paletta International Corporation, which is located near Appleby Line and the QEW, about 4 0’clock yesterday.

Company president Angelo Paletta says the fire left him “in shock and definitely not the Christmas present he was looking for.”

As many as 200 workers are ordinarily in the plant processing turkey, chicken and pork, but fewer staff were on site due to maintenance issues, and no one was injured.

No word on the cause or damage of the fire, which crews battled well into the evening.
