In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was down 77.29 points at 26,029.48.
The S&P 500 index was down 10.33 points at 2,881.31, while the Nasdaq composite was down 54.38 points at 7,782.75.
The Canadian dollar traded at 74.76 cents U-S compared with an average of 75.05 cents on Thursday.
