GFO wants risk management programs strengthened

Grain Farmers of Ontario is asking the federal and provincial governments to strengthen risk management programs in the wake of a corn harvest that contained high levels of a mould known as vomitoxin or “DON”.

The C-E-O of the Guelph-based company, Barry Senft, says business risk management programs have been eroded because the grain industry has experienced good prices since 2008, but that changed for some farmers in the fall.

In November, the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs announced it would help farmers affected by vomitoxin, which was caused by wet weather during the harvest.
