The Christian Labour Association welcomes a recommendation from Hamilton city staff to open construction bids to all qualified contractors and workers.
CLAC says currently, the City can only accept bids for major projects from contractors whose employees are members of the carpenters’ union.
It says companies whose workers belong to other unions or are not unionized aren’t permitted to bid on major buildings and certain infrastructure work.
CLAC also says construction projects cost 8 to 25 per cent more than they would under open tendering.
CLAC says it Hamilton City Council accepts the recommendation, it will end a labour monopoly the carpenters’ union has had since 2005.
The report goes to the City’s General Issues Committee next Wednesday.
The Christian Labour Association represents 6,000 workers across Ontario.
