Hamilton faces Saudi doctor exodus

Unless Ottawa and Riyadh can mend fences, Hamilton faces the sudden loss of 153 Saudi doctors.

The physicians work mostly at Hamilton Health Science and St. Joseph’s Healthcare and analysts say they can’t be easily replaced because Saudi Arabia foots most of the bill.

None of the doctors have left yet, but Hamilton’s hospitals are bracing for their imminent departure and developing contingency plans.

The doctors were given until Sept. 1 to depart Canada by the kingdom after it suspended diplomatic relations on Sunday.
