Hurricane Florence is packing a punch.
Officials in Jacksonville, North Carolina say about 70 people have been rescued from a hotel whose structural integrity is being threatened by the Category 1 storm.
A basketball-sized hole was spotted in the hotel’s wall, along with other life-threatening damage, with some cinder blocks crumbling and parts of the roof collapsing.
No injuries were reported.
The big storm is moving at a snail’s pace — measured at nine kilometres an hour — and officials say that means there will be more time for heavy rains to soak the region.
The U-S National Hurricane Center had said earlier Friday that Florence’s arrival would come with “catastrophic” flooding over portions of the Carolinas.
