Benchmark U-S crude is down $1.65 cents this morning to $51.24 U-S a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

The January crude contract slipped 36 cents in trading yesterday to settle at $52.89.

The Canadian dollar is trading overseas this morning at 74.43 cents U-S, down 46 -100ths of a cent from yesterday’s average value of 74.89.

It’s the lowest the loonie has been in eighteen months.

The S&P/TSX composite index closed up 119.05 points to 15,182.64, making up for part of the 211-point drop it experienced Tuesday.

In New York, stock markets were closed to mark the death of former president George H.W. Bush.
