Oil, loonie lower to start week

Gas prices range from .81 to .99 cents a litre as of 4 0’clock this morning.

Benchmark U-S crude is down 32 cents this morning to $52.40 U-S per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

The March contract gained eight cents in trading Friday to settle at $52.72.

The Canadian dollar is trading overseas this morning at 75.32 cents U-S, down four -100ths of a cent from Friday’s average value of 75.36.

Canada’s main stock index posted its fifth positive week of the year despite closing lower Friday.

The S&P/TSX composite index was down 70.03 points at 15,633.33.

In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was down 63.20 points at 25,106.33.

The S&P 500 index was up 1.83 points at 2,707.88, while the Nasdaq composite was up 9.85 points at 7,298.20.
