Reducing debt and deficit what the doctor ordered: Barrett

Haldimand-Norfolk MPP Toby Barrett says for far too long, Ontario patients and families have been getting lost in our health care system, falling through the cracks, and waiting too long for care.

He says mismanagement, a crippling debt and deficit have made it impossible for Ontarians to get the care they need.

Barrett says the health care system is facing capacity pressures – it does not have the right mix of services, beds, or digital tools to be ready for a growing and rapidly-aging population – a population with more complex care needs.

He says problems range from hallway healthcare, to waitlists for long-term care, to poor value for money, and to poor patient experience.

Barrett says the previous government’s answer was to throw more and more money at the broken system, which didn’t work because the system became worse to the point we see it today…critical.

“Today’s Ontario Budget confirmed my colleagues and I are determined to reform the health care system to one that is efficient, compassionate and one that is envied around the globe,” Toby Barrett said. “We have to do more to ensure our publicly-funded system of health care is sustainable into the future, and that quality health care is there for us when we or our loved ones need it most.”

As reiterated in today’s Budget, the Ontario government will end hallway health care and build a public health care system centered on the patient by redirecting money to front-line services.

“One of the concerns expressed in my office over the past several years that has been the lack of assistance for those low income seniors needing dental care,” Barrett said. “Knowing that low income seniors will now get the care they need and deserve is heartening.”
