Not many understand diversity and equality, which is why Shawna Russel started a petition to see the need for change through education.

Premier Doug Ford is being asked to implement mandatory anti-racist history classes from Kindergarten to Grade 12. “After experiencing racism in both catholic and public schools I don’t want any other colored individuals to feel like they cannot be themselves at school when they are there to learn,” says Russell.

Russell sees this as a key component to raising generations that respect everyone. She says: “Our young generations need to be taught about diversity so we can aim to end racial profiling completely. People of color matter just as much as anyone else and they deserve to feel like they finally matter. People of color deserve to feel equal.”
