Culture Days at Adelaide Hunter Hoodless Homestead
September 28, 2019 @ 10:00 am
On Saturday, September 28th, the Federated Women’s Institutes of Canada (FWIC) is celebrating its 100th anniversary at Adelaide Hunter Hoodless Homestead during Culture Days. With fun and enriching activities for the whole community, this is a great day out for the family, all for FREE! Construction of the new Community Hub and Learning Centre has been going on all Summer, but the doors are opening for a sneak peek.
The day starts at 10 AM with greetings and a Maple Tree planting. The legacy of the FWIC has lasted 100 years; imagine what this tree will grow into in the next century! After the planting, a commemorative red ribbon-tying ceremony to mark the FWIC’s commitment to the recently completed Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls, a very important cause to the organization.
At 10:30, things take a colourful turn! The Cambridge Butterfly Conservatory needs YOU to help release a “kaleidoscope” of Monarch butterflies into the wild. But you needn’t keep your eyes on the skies; there are plenty of butterfly themed activities on the museum grounds to keep families entertained. The historic house even has a butterfly and bee garden to help feed our pollenating friends!
Next, explore Addie’s House from 11AM-1PM. Tour around the home of one of the founding members of the Women’s Institute. Adelaide Hoodless was a champion of women’s education and food safety, and you’re invited to see where she spent her childhood, for the first time since June!
Who are the FWIC? It’s been 100 years since the Federated Women’s Institutes of Canada was founded, but its core principles of leadership, advocacy, and education are still important to women and families. Members both locally and nationally will attend the Annual General Meeting at the Homestead at 2 PM. The Women’s Institute has been advocating for social change for the good of many local communities since 1919 and are eager to add another year to their calendars!
This event is free and open to the public and will run rain or shine. Make sure to bring your picnic lunch! Keep an eye on our website at adelaidehoodless.ca for future events. Adelaide Hunter Hoodless Homestead is located at 359 Blue Lake Road, St George, Ontario.
