Brantford City councillors have defeated a proposal to put the question of zero budget increases on the ballot in this October’s municipal election.
Councillors voted 6-3 against the referendum measure put forwarded by Councillors Dan McCreary and Greg Martin at a committee meeting last night.
Mayor Chris Friel was one of the six members in opposition to the measure.
A final vote will be held at the full council meeting on January 30th.
McCreary and Martin say residents should be asked if they’re in favour of a spending freeze in the next term of council and if they support no new user fees.
In response to the councillors who opposed the motion, McCreary said “we’re addicted to taxing and spending and we need to draw a line.”
